“Heads Up”: New Exclusive CampBlood Comic coming soon!

Sorry folks, but our heroes, Buzz and Chucky, must put the mystery on hold for another week and make way for a new exclusive CampBlood Comic titled, “Heads Up”! This short three page comic story is another creation of Andy Swist and is a much darker take on horror… with a sci-fi twist!
Take a look at the preliminary character sketches and stay tuned for more next week:

Pepper- 20 something voluptuous redhead. Pale skin, wearing a torn up jumpsuit and boots. Looks tired and worn out. Think Molly Ringwald mixed with Melanie Griffith.

Sierra- early-mid 30’s exotic beauty. Mean and lean physique also in a torn up jumpsuit and boots. Her hair is in small, tight braids and loosely tied behind her head. She looks human, except for parts of her skin looks worn away, revealing cybernetic parts. Looks like she’s seen better days, but there is still an underlying strength about her. Think Cher mixed with Grace Jones.

iPhone, iPod, iPad…iZombie! Vertigo’s comic is a supernatural who-done-it treat filled with vampires, ghosts, shape-shifters… and zombies! Issue #1 debuted May 5th, and if you didn’t check it out… I encourage you to do so. The first panel alludes to the Wizard of Oz, there’s a multi-culti supporting cast, and LBGT visibility (I spotted a rainbow flag t-shirt)! It is Oregon after all.

This story centers on the character of Gwen Dylan who works digging graves for an eco-friendly cemetery in Eugene, Oregon. She’s seems to be pretty much a loner… except her one and only friend, Ellie, a ghost that looks like an Austin Powers fembot. Gwen makes the most of her undead life and maintains her sanity by eating brains once a month. It seems this diet is what keeps her from becoming a mindless, shambling monster. Only problem is that she is plagued with the memories of each brain’s owner. Maybe that’s why s Gwen has a problem remembering her previous mortal life? But there’s a bigger problem with “the corpse of the month” because it was a murder victim. Now she’s got to catch the killer to put the voices in her head to rest.

Seems there’s a lot of trouble around town. An innocent paint ball game is interrupted by what looks like a troupe of vampire babes sporting “Blood Sports” tank tops. Elsewhere a sleek sports car hides two monster hunters working for some yet unknown corporation. And poor Scott is a were-terrier with bad social skills.

Mike Allred graces the cover and is also the interior artist for this book. I’m a fan of his work and it seems perfectly suited for Chris Roberson’s story. Did I mention that this issue is only $1.00! There’s not much you can buy for a buck these days, and if you buy at Forbidden Planet (NYC) you can get a free comic bag and board for free, too. It’s almost like your dollar has supernatural buying power!

Camp Classic: Where Monsters Dwell #16

I challenge you to find a more adorable monster to take over the world. People of the world meet: GOOGAM! He’s probably the biggest l’enfant terrible you’ll ever meet, and will shrink you to the size of an ant without a second thought!

At first glance, it appeared to me that Googam got his kicks spying on people from his suburban home and scaring away visitors.  But upon further reading I discovered there is much more to this size queen than chasing paperboys and demanding obedience from Earthlings.

How did I find such a creature? Well, I was digging through my old comics when this slobbering cutie leaped out at me from the pages of “Where Monsters Dwell”. I was originally going to just post a few pics of this critter, but there were too many gems that I’ve decided to give you the entire story here. Enjoy Googam and his crazy antics below. If anyone can tell me who the artist or writer for this story is, PUHLEEZE post their genius in the comments below.

True Blood comic from IDW

David Messina's cover for issue #1 of True Blood comic bookGet your fangs into the artwork of the four alternate covers and preview the first six pages of the True Blood comic book at True Blood’s Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=172874&id=69144888562

My favorite cover is from interior artist David Messina, and I’m happy to say I’m loving it. He’s got a good likeness of the characters and I really am looking forward to reading this series. The comic debuts this July at the San Diego Comicon, and with any luck Alan Ball and perhaps a few stars from the HBO series will be there. Maybe even Charlene Harris herself?

Featured Artist: The Haunted Studio

The Final GuestDo you live in a haunted house, or perhaps just like the idea because you’re a fan of Halloween and things that go bump in the night. Well then, The Haunted Studio is for you!

The artist behind this amazing studio, Lewis Barrett Lehrman, is a veteran graphic artist and illustrator who is also a professional watercolorist, teacher and author of several books. Lehrman began the Haunted Studio after selling prints of some Halloween themed watercolors he made on Ebay over ten years ago. He has kept his studio alive painting commissions of people’s houses, charging them with a supernatural energy. To this day he has painted over eighty homes and has adopted the title “Painter of Dark“.

Take a look at just a few of my favorite paintings from his online gallery:

The Ghosts In the GroveHere is a perfect example of how Lehrman takes a seemingly ordinary home and transforms it completely. He explains the process:

“Beginning with new or old photos of your house, of family members, pets, Halloween costumes, decorations, etc., plus your feelings and ideas about what you would like included, I create a “study painting” that will eventually become a work of art you and your family will always cherish.”

For a complete explanation of the process click here.

Nine Spooks

My favorite “spooky house” painting is one of Lehrman’s first. “Nine Spooks” is the perfect title, inviting you to search for them, including the ones in costume.

If you can’t spare the money to get your own home painted, you can still get in on the action. There are many prints available in a variety of sizes suitable for framing. There is also a newsletter, The Halloweenist, where you can get all the latest news and updates, including a “Disembodied Brain Teaser” each month. If you are so inclined, there is even a Haunted Studio spirit board to call upon the powers from beyond in your own home!

Things That Go Bump In The BasementTruly the Haunted Studio has much to offer, but at it’s core is great art. Perhaps one of his scariest paintings, “Things That Go Bump In The Basement” captures the fear and wonder of what may lurk in the dark corners of your basement. I seriously love the dark spectral figure in the doorway to the left, and more reveal themselves as you study the piece. Even the furnace comes alive with a hellish grin! Hmmmm… I wonder if Freddy Krueger is about to show up? Well, not really. There is nothing very threatening or violent with the work, it’s mostly just creepy.

I Dream The Midnight MidwayHauntings aren’t limited to the home either, but include a variety of landscapes and locations. For example, “I Dream The Midnight Midway” depicts an abandoned amusement park after midnight. Check out the floating fortune teller booth and strange figures in the background. The amount of detail and his technique is quite impressive.

If you like these pictures, I encourage you to visit the “Painter of Dark” himself at http://www.hauntedstudio.com
